Who we are

A joint-stock independent water and power producer

Qatar Power Q.S.C. was established in January 2005 to meet the growing electricity and potable water demands of the State of Qatar, safely, cleanly, and reliably. Our plant at Ras Laffan Industrial City is among the largest Independent Water & Power Projects in the country, built on an approximately US $1 billion facility financed by international, regional, and local banks.

Commercial power production began in May 2006, water in September 2006, with full capacity reached by June 2008. Under our Power and Water Purchase Agreement, QPOWER supplies KAHRAMAA for 25 years, with an option to extend a further five.

How the plant works

Two outputs, one facility

Electricity and potable water are produced together at Ras Laffan, with waste heat from power generation put to work desalinating seawater.

Electricity generation

1,025 MW combined cycle

Three gas turbines (237.35 MW each) and two steam turbines (221 MW each), supplied by Siemens AG, run in combined cycle, with waste heat from the gas turbine exhaust generating steam for the steam turbines and for water production.

Potable water production

60 MIGD by MSF distillation

Four multi-stage flash (MSF) distillers, each rated at 15.13 MIGD and supplied by Doosan Heavy Engineering, convert seawater into potable water using waste heat recovered from the power cycle.
